Buffleheads by SeeWoods
Buffleheads
Buffleheads: definitely the cutest ducks around, for sure. These guys (gals?) were swimming and diving along the shoreline in the surf. These were both either females or juveniles; the males have a much larger and distinctive white patch on their heads.

North Beach by SeeWoods
North Beach
Standing on the dunes at North Beach, looking east towards the lighthouse on Point Wilson. In the far distance is Whidbey Island, and behind that the North Cascades. If you could turn to the left, you'd be looking out across the Straight of Juan de Fuca towards the San Juan islands and Canada! Not visible on a stormy day like this, though. The view from the top of the bluffs is often spectacular. It's so easy to create art in such an inspiring landscape! This is watercolor on some actual watercolor paper, good stuff.

Gray Jays at Trillium Lake by SeeWoods
Gray Jays at Trillium Lake
I had a chance to observe these guys while skiing around Trillium Lake up on Mt Hood. There was a large group of skiers stopped to admire the view of the mountain while having a snack and the jays were very interested.  They must be pretty well acclimated to people because they were willing to eat from the hand and perch on people's heads. Most of these drawings were done at home from photos I took as it's somewhat difficult to sketch in the snow.

Field Study: Red-tailed Hawk by SeeWoods
Field Study: Red-tailed Hawk
Field study of a group of Red-tailed hawks I observed at a park on San Francisco Bay. I heard these guys before I saw them- one adult was calling and repeatedly leaving its perch, circling a stand of eucalyptus trees. I got closer and found the carcass of a juvenile hawk underneath the tree. My guess is that the adult was the mother, which would explain the odd behavior. I did a few sketches while I was out, and added more details later with photos I also took at the scene. This was also submitted to Guides From the Field (Silicon Valley).

Field Study: California Poppy by SeeWoods
Field Study: California Poppy
Field study showing the various stages of a California poppy flower, from bud to bloom to seed pod. The sketches were done at a park in the SF Bay Area, and submitted to Guides From the Field (Silicon Valley). A fun project that I enjoyed contributing to!

makes for some truly excellent drawing fodder, the images are incredible. My other classes are good too because they don't require very diligent note-taking (online lecture slides, my savior).
